June 2026 Performance Synopsis

June delivered a striking divergence across thematic portfolios, with a 44-percentage-point spread between the best and worst performers signalling a pronounced rotation into the physical economy. Testing & Inspection Equipment led at 24.88% and Manufacturing Technologies followed at 23.69%, joined by Composite Materials, Electronic Components and Surface Technologies clustered around 18%. The common thread was exposure to physical production infrastructure and capital-expenditure cycles, and the strength extended into the housing cluster, where Residential Real Estate gained 11.65% and Personal & Property Insurance rose 8.79%.

The heaviest losses hit speculative technology and commodity-linked themes. Space Exploration fell 19.78% and Aerospace & Science Satellites dropped 17.35% as SpaceX's record IPO drew capital from listed peers, while Digital Transformation declined 15.78% amid the Anthropic–White House standoff. The metals complex sold off hard — Silver (-15.12%), Aluminum (-14.92%) and Gold (-14.29%) — and high-multiple technology de-rated, with Artificial Intelligence (-10.86%), Software Development & Solutions (-13.83%) and Quantum Technology (-14.15%) all reversing prior gains. Energy was broadly weak across fossil fuels and renewables.

Overall, June's landscape tells a clear story of investors favouring tangible, cash-generative industrial businesses with near-term earnings visibility while selling speculative technology, commodities and digital economy themes. The rotation was decisive and broad-based, suggesting a meaningful shift in risk appetite rather than isolated sector-specific catalysts.

Three themes are on the radar heading into July: Tin Production and Processing, on record LME prices and tripling AI data-centre demand; Superconducting Materials and Technologies, on fusion milestones including China's CRAFT magnet and ITER's cold-test facility; and Autonomous Swarm Intelligence and Coordination, on rising defence budgets for AI-enabled unmanned systems.

Best Performing Themes

June's winners were overwhelmingly an industrial and precision-manufacturing story. Testing & Inspection Equipment led at 24.88% on an AI- and HBM-driven surge in chip-testing demand, while Manufacturing Technologies (23.69%) rode additive-manufacturing adoption from Apple to defence procurement. Composite Materials (18.26%) benefited from tight high-end fibreglass supply, Electronic Components (18.05%) from a global memory shortage, and Surface Technologies (18.04%) from clean-energy and semiconductor demand.

Worst Performing Themes

June's worst performers were the prior months' speculative leaders alongside a broad metals sell-off. Space Exploration fell 19.78% as NASA's Artemis programme slipped and SpaceX's record IPO drew capital away from listed peers, and Aerospace & Science Satellites dropped 17.35% on intensifying Starlink competition. Digital Transformation declined 15.78% amid the Anthropic–White House standoff and AI ROI doubts, while Silver (-15.12%) and Aluminum (-14.92%) led the metals unwind.

Cross-Month Comparison

June marked a sharp rotation away from speculative technology and towards the physical economy. High-flying themes such as Quantum Technology, Space Exploration, Artificial Intelligence and Software Development & Solutions reversed their strong May gains, while Testing & Inspection Equipment, Manufacturing Technologies, Residential Real Estate and Personal & Property Insurance emerged as the strongest performers.

Interesting Themes from Cross-Month Comparison

June's sharpest reversals were Quantum Technology (May +35.53% to June -14.15%) and Software Development & Solutions (+13.36% to -13.83%) unwinding crowded May trades, Artificial Intelligence (+13.58% to -10.86%) cooling on bubble concerns and government intervention, while Residential Real Estate (-2.30% to +11.65%) and Personal & Property Insurance (-2.94% to +8.79%) swung from May weakness into strength on a landmark housing bill and a strong Q1 underwriting result respectively.

Region Best/Worst Performing Themes

Surface engineering and semiconductor themes led the regional tables. Surface Technologies topped the rankings—up 44.75% in CN and 25.66% in the US on clean-energy and AI-chip coating demand—while Semiconductor Chips, Design & Manufacturing gained 37.02% in CN (though a more modest 9.43% in EMEA) on the memory shortage and China's self-sufficiency push. Taxis & Ride-Hailing rose 26.38% in APAC-ex-CN on Uber's autonomous-vehicle positioning, with Fibers (APAC-ex-CN, 12.44%) and Measuring Instruments (EMEA, 11.11%) also higher.

On the downside, Batteries & Energy Storage fell 21.28% in APAC-ex-CN as sodium-ion competition and solid-state delays weighed on lithium-ion incumbents, Sports & Fitness dropped 20.18% in CN under Big Tech encroachment, and Telecommunications Satellites lost 17.64% in EMEA as LEO competition and the Dish DBS bankruptcy pressured traditional operators.

Themes on the Radar

Tin production and processing

Tin is gaining traction as a critical-mineral/AI-infrastructure play after LME tin futures hit a record high of $59,000 per tonne on 2 June 2026, driven by a structural supply deficit from Myanmar conflict disruptions and Indonesia's tightened export licensing. Demand reinforcement comes from data-centre buildout: AI server production consumed roughly 6,000–8,000 tonnes of tin annually in 2025, projected to more than triple to about 25,000 tonnes by 2030, keeping the bullish narrative intact even amid a mid-June correction towards $52,000–53,000/t. The combination of supply shocks and AI demand makes this an emerging commodity radar item. [ 352 , 353 ]

Superconducting Materials and Technologies

Superconductors gained traction on fusion milestones in June. On 27 June, China's CRAFT "artificial sun" programme completed and tested a 582-tonne D-shaped toroidal-field magnet measuring 21m × 12m × 3.3m — 1.3 times the volume of ITER's TF magnets and storing three times more energy — alongside a high-temperature superconducting central solenoid coil operating at 60 kiloamperes with 6.03 megajoules of energy storage, with both achieving 100% domestic production. Earlier, on 1 June, ITER's magnet cold test facility entered operational mode. These signals point to accelerating industrial-scale HTS magnet capability central to the fusion supply chain. [ 354 , 355 ]

Autonomous Swarm Intelligence and Coordination

Drone-swarm autonomy gained traction in June around the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition and continued Pentagon procurement signals. A June 2026 Breaking Defense interview with Palladyne AI detailed edge-based decentralised swarm control (SwarmOS), and multiple defence vendors showcased coordinated autonomous systems. Rising global defence budgets focused on AI-enabled unmanned systems are driving investor attention to the swarm-coordination layer specifically. [ 356 , 357 ]

Looking Ahead

June's rotation into the physical economy could prove durable. Advanced materials and industrial manufacturing—Composite Materials, Surface Technologies and Manufacturing Technologies—are underpinned by AI-infrastructure demand, reshoring and policy support, while the housing recovery behind Residential Real Estate has fresh legislative momentum and easing mortgage rates. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has removed a key risk premium from energy, though the Qatar terminal explosion leaves LNG recovery timelines uncertain.

The speculative end of the market remains the swing factor. Space Exploration, Quantum Technology and the broader technology stack round-tripped their gains in June, and whether they stabilise or extend their declines will shape the coming month. Tin, superconducting materials and autonomous swarm coordination are the emerging themes worth monitoring, each tied to the AI, fusion and defence buildouts respectively.
